Overview of Scholarship

 1) Purpose

To support individuals in the following two categories who wish to pursue research in the humanities and social sciences, with the aim of contributing to the international community through mutual understanding with other countries.

Categories:

・Student (approximately 2)

・Graduate student or researcher (approximately 12)

2) Application Period: Monday, 2 June 2025 to Thursday, 24 July 2025

3) Selection Process

・Preliminary screening: Document screening at the beginning of September 2025.

・Secondary screening: Online interview will be held on Saturday, 13 September 2025.

 *Applicants who pass the preliminary screening will proceed to an online interview as part of the secondary screening.

4) Notification of Selection Results: Middle of October 2025

5) Research

Awardees are to start their research after the award ceremony (tentatively scheduled for mid-February 2026).

 01 Eligible Research

This scholarship is intended to support overseas research at a university, graduate school, or research institute located in Asia, Africa, or Latin America.

Asia refers to the region encompassing West Asia, Central Asia, Mongolia to the north, and Indonesia to the south.

West Asia refers to the six countries on the Arabian Peninsula, Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Yemen, Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Israel, Turkey, and Cyprus.

Central Asia refers to Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan.

Note: This scholarship is for research in Asia, Africa, and Latin America only. It does not cover study and research in North America, Europe, or Australia.

02 Outline of Scholarship

 

Students Graduated school students/Researchers
Eligibility Enrolled as an undergraduate student at a university in Japan at the time of application and during the scholarship period Enrolled as a student or affiliated as an academic staff or researcher at a university, graduate school, or research institution in Japan at the time of application and during the scholarship period
Possesses Japanese nationality (excepting overseas residents)
Has permission to reside permanently in Japan
Will begin overseas research between Feb 2026 (after the award ceremony) and Mar 2027
Sufficient language proficiency, e.g., for conducting research at an overseas university
Less than 40 years of age as of 1 April 2025

Not a recipient of other scholarships

If applying for multiple scholarships, please consult with the foundation as soon as the results are known.
Awards Approximately 2 Approximately 12 
Duration of Scholarship 9 months to 12 months (1 year) 1 year to 2 years (3-month units)
Amount

 

200,000 yen per month

Including living expenses, admission fees, tuition, necessary expenses related to research, insurance premiums, etc.

Support begins after submitting certificate of admission and entry visa.

As a rule, an amount will be transferred to the applicant’s account every three months
Travel Expenses Round trip airfare (amount differs depending on destination)

 

 

 

03 Screening Method

Careful and fair screening of scholarship applicants will be conducted by the screening committee.

・Preliminary screening: Document screening

 Applicants will be notified of the preliminary screening results at the beginning of September 2025.

・Secondary screening: Interview screening will be held on Saturday, 13 September 2025.

 Applicants who pass the preliminary screening will proceed to an online interview as part of the secondary screening.

To ensure a smooth online interview experience, an internet connectivity test is scheduled to be conducted beforehand.

 Applicants will be notified of the selection results by email in the middle of October 2025.

Note that we are unable to respond to inquires regarding the selection results.
