Adult Guardianship, Inheritance, and Wills in a Super-Aging Society

TOKOTANI Fumio
(Professor, Osaka School of International Public Policy, Osaka University)

Japan has already entered a super-aging society, and family relationships have greatly changed. Households with elderly individuals either living on their own or in a couple have increased, which has led to a demand for society to establish systems to support the elderly. Adult guardianship is one of those systems, and in April of this year, 2 laws relating to adult guardianship were enacted. Disputes over inheritance have also increased, and large-scale revisions to civil provisions regarding inheritance and wills are being discussed. Let's discuss the recent legal environment on these topics together.
