Hitokoto Ichiba #3 - "Inconvenient Design that Makes Sense"

2016-11-2 (Wed) 19:00 - 20:00

The Hitokoto Ichiba is a place where people from outside of the university can connect with the goings-on from inside of the university. Let's take a look at the topic for this session! KAWAKAMI Koji from the Design School at Kyoto University will join us for this 3rd Hitokoto Ichiba.

It's said that "convenient is best," but are there things that you think are better to be inconvenient? A measuring cup with its lines faded allowing you to measure liquid with just your eyes, the inaccuracy of your smart phone's GPS leading you to a wonderful shop you'd never noticed before... Let's think about our everyday lives and discuss the essence of this "beneficial inconvenience" from the viewpoint of system design.

What is Lab Café?

A major program instituted at Art Area B1, "Lab Café" is designed and implemented by the Center for the Study of Communication-Design. Lab Café is an interactive program in which participants have wide-ranging discussions on a variety of topics. The program aims to make the station a communication space in the arts and academia by taking up various themes in philosophy, art, science and technology and providing the general public with chances to be exposed to expertise on those topics.

What is Art Area B1?

The concourse of the first basement of Naniwabashi Station was set up as Art Area B1 when the Keihan Electric Railway's Nakanoshima Line was opened on October 19, 2008. Since then, the project has aimed to make the station a center of artistic communication.
