Why is a fetus raised in the womb without being rejected from the mother's body, even though it is considered a "foreign object" to the mother's body, containing DNA of the father? Through repeated localized exposure to seminal fluid in sexual intercourse, antigens from the fetus that originate from the father are presented in the periphery, and immunotolerance to specific antigens originating from the father is induced through regulatory T-cells. It is also known that becoming pregnant soon after meeting presents a high risk for gestational hypertension.

Prof. SAKAGUCHI Shimon, the discoverer of regulatory T-cells, will give a lecture on the basics of regulatory T-cells. Afterwards, Prof. Sarah Robertson will give a lecture on the function of regulatory T-cells in pregnancy.
