The 73rd OSIPP Policy Forum

Next Generation Views of the U.S. - Japan Alliance: Looking Over the Horizon

This program aims to yield a better understanding of the importance of the US-Japan alliance, its role in the region and the expectations that the next generation of security experts around the world has for this partnership.  The panel session will focus on three dimensions: existing regional and global security concerns, over the horizon challenges for the alliance, and, most importantly, the importance that younger security experts attach to US-Japan coordination on security issues. The program will address new geographic and functional challenges, redefined roles and missions of Japan’s Self-Defense Forces and the U.S. Forces, and shifting priorities. Perhaps most importantly, it aims to demonstrate the importance that next generation leaders attach to the alliance and the expectations that they have of it – and Japan – in an increasingly complex and interconnected world.
