The Linguistics of Wonderland - The Madness of the Mad Tea Party

OKITA Tomoko
(Professor, Graduate School of Language and Culture, Osaka University)

The reason why Alice's Adventures in Wonderland has been loved for over 150 years lies in the wordplay and logic of author Lewis Carroll, also a mathematics lecturer at the University of Oxford. In this lecture, we'll take a look at Chapter VII "A Mad Tea-Party," in which Alice joins the tea party after being told there's "No room! No room!" after which Alice is argued down with a number of contradictions.

We'll take a look at words and logic puzzles hidden in innocent-looking English phrases; even those who are not confident in their English ability can join and enjoy.
