The Corners of Japanese History as seen from Kamigata Rakugo

(Visiting Professor, Osaka University)

Life and customs in the late Edo and early Meiji periods are described in classic rakugo. Of course, there is a bit of deformation and fiction mixed in to make the stories more interesting, but if you carefully interpret those details, what you may find the reality of daily life in the past lies there. For example, in letters of prostitutes read in rakugo, things like the culture of red-light districts at the time, the rules of letters, and knowledge of sorobun (an old form of Japanese writing) emerge. Those are the corners of Japanese history that you would never find in a textbook. But the truth lies in these corners. Let's talk about a side of rakugo even more amusing than the rakugo itself.
