Intellectual Property Workshop

2016-6-4 (Sat) 13:00 - 16:00

This workshop will begin with lectures on basic information regarding intellectual property such as patents and copyright, after which we will learn about the more practical side of intellectual property, such as the process of patenting and the relationship between intellectual property and business. No prior knowledge on intellectual property is required.

This workshop regarding intellectual property is intended for Osaka University students.

We'll cover topics such as patents, which universities are becoming more active in acquiring due to discovers such as iPS cells, copyright, which the prime minister mentioned with regard to the relationship between derivative works and criminal punishment, and trademarks, which we have seen lately in the media in stories such as those on the Olympic emblem and parodies of certain high quality watches, among others.

We'll provide a place to study intellectual property in a practical manner, a topic which is surprisingly very close to us and gaining importance all the time.

We're planning to learn about the topics below, but we may also include other topics from your requests and suggestions.

• "Patents, copyright, trademarks... Just what is intellectual property anyway?" - This is a lecture on the basics of intellectual property.

• "Is this idea (intention) a patent?" - We'll learn about how to tell whether or not your invention has fulfilled the requirements to obtain a patent while performing prior art search.

• "Games, Vocaloid, and even rice cakes!? Just what kind of patents do things become?" - Through actually filling out a portion of a patent application, we'll learn the know-how of properly protecting our ideas.

• "Releasing a patent that you worked so hard to obtain... How are intellectual property used anyway?" - We'll use case studies that gathered the world's attention, as well as the mechanisms of intellectual property activity of companies in order to learn about the relationship between intellectual property and business.
