Promoting Good Health through Sports

NAKATA Ken
(Graduate School of Medicine, Osaka University)

The world of sports is currently in the midst of a large social movement towards the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics, as well as Japan's contributions to Asia and the rest of the world following these events. The "game" of sport developed from simply "playing" into a "competition with rules," and with this came the overtone of emotional and social education through physical activity. In 2015, UNESCO even proposed a new concept of sports as "any physical activity that contributes to one's health." I'll explain about the medical role of sports, physical activity which fulfills us physically, emotionally, and socially, as well as talk about balance training, which is the key to prevention of injury and disability, improving our bodily function, and promoting good health.
