"The Future of the Maritime Nation of Japan: Outlook of the Seas of East Asia" -- YAMADA Yoshihiko (Professor, School of Marine Science and Technology, Tokai University)

2016-5-31 (Tue) 10:30 - 14:30

The maritime nation of Japan has a wealth of maritime resources, such as offshore and fishing resources, just waiting to be utilized. Through making use of the ocean, Japan is sure to develop even further. However, the international situation surrounding Japan is complicated. In the South China Sea, China is threatening the sovereignty of surrounding nations through actions like building a man-made island. Their repeated approaches to the Senkaku islands as well as excessive fishing in the adjacent seas continue to take place. At this lecture, I'd like to discuss the prosperity and international contribution of Japan in international relations from the viewpoint of the ocean.

After the lecture, there will be a conversation between Specially Appointed Professor YABUNAKA Mitoji and Prof. YAMADA Yoshihiko.

This conversation between experts on the seas of East Asia is quite valuable, so we are also planning to hold a Q&A sessions for members of the audience. We hope to see you there.

There will be a social gathering during the lunch hour. A light meal to eat will be provided during that time.
