Kaitokudo for the 21st Century, Osaka University i-spot Lecture - "How is the Water in the Aquapolis Osaka? Is it Dirty or Clean? - Rivers, Harbors, and the Sea"

2016-3-3 (Thu) 18:30 - 20:00

Osaka University and Osaka City have been working together to provide citizens with small lectures in an "at home" atmosphere. Making use of its wide range of academic fields, Osaka University promotes the sharing of its learning with citizens, thereby contributing to the revitalization of local communities. The themes for these two i-spot lecture series are "Aquapolis Stories" and "The Now and Then of the City of Osaka." It's free to attend, so please don't hesitate to join us!

How is the Water in the Aquapolis Osaka? Is it Dirty or Clean? - Rivers, Harbors, and the Sea

Lecturer: IRIE Masayasu (Associate Professor, Graduate School of Engineering, Osaka University)

Lecture Overview:

The Osaka of the past had canals running through it in every direction, worthy of its title of "aquapolis." Canals became roads and parking lots, and the town’s development saw it turn its back on rivers. So it's no wonder why there are those who feel, "The water in Osaka is dirty!" I'd like to speak to from my fields of expertise, "flow" and "water quality," about how dirty the water is, how clean it's become, and why. Also, I'll speak about everything from the rivers (Dotonbori) to the sea (Osaka Bay) of the aquapolis Osaka.

This lecture is part of the series entitled "Aquapolis Stories."
