Civic Participation Symposium "The Power of Plant Biology -- Learning About Genetically Modified Plants Through Classes and Experiments"

2016-2-11 (Thu) 14:00 - 18:00

In order to deepen the understanding about plant biology and genetically engineered plants, a symposium will be held for junior high school students and up as well as individuals involved in education. An event for tasting GE papaya is also scheduled.
Genetically modified plants, one of the major plant biotechnologies, bring benefits such as increased agricultural productivity, new horticultural varieties, and the production of substances in plants. In actuality, a lot of genetically modified plants are imported from overseas and consumed in Japan.
However, due to concerns about ecological effects of the expansion of plants using new technology and safety concerns about ingesting GM foods, some people in Japan still do not positively accept them. This may be because of their lack of knowledge about GM technology.
We would like to hold a symposium in order to help citizens to understand this issue and inspire children to become botanists.
