The Taika Reform and Naniwa Nagara-Toyosaki Palace

Lecturer: ICHI Hiroki

Lecture Overview:

Most everyone knows of the Taika Reforms. According to the Nihon Shoki, we can gather than it involved large political reform. However, as the Nihon Shoki is a historical document that was edited in later generations, getting a true picture of it requires examination. Until the 20th century, these reforms were not well received, with some going as far as to deny these reforms outright. But with the discovery of a large number of mokkan (narrow strips of wood on which messages were written) from the Asuka period, as well as the advancement of the excavation of Naniwa Palace, the evaluation of these Reforms is starting to change. In this lecture, we'll take clues from Naniwa Palace in order to pursue the real picture of the Taika Reforms.

This lecture is part of the series entitled "The Now and Then of the City of Osaka."
