Kaitokudo for the 21st Century, Osaka University i-spot Lecture - The Space and Regionality of the Problem of Waste - A Case Study on Modern Osaka City

2016-2-19 (Fri) 18:30 - 20:00

Osaka University and Osaka City have been working together to provide citizens with small lectures in an "at home" atmosphere. Making use of its wide range of academic fields, Osaka University promotes the sharing of its learning with citizens, thereby contributing to the revitalization of local communities. The themes for these two i-spot lecture series are "Aquapolis Stories" and "The Now and Then of the City of Osaka." It's free to attend, so please don't hesitate to join us!

The Space and Regionality of the Problem of Waste - A Case Study on Modern Osaka City

Lecturer: NAMIE Akihiko (Specially Appointed Researcher, Graduate School of Letters, Osaka University)

Lecture Overview

Modern Osaka City, with its development as a major city, has constantly had to face the problem of waste. There are both locally occurring issues such as overflowing landfills pumping out foul odors and conflicts over locations of waste incineration plants, as well as problems that should be tackled as a whole of Osaka City, such as the amount of waste and recycling percentages. Additionally, Osaka's regionality can be found through comparisons to places like Tokyo and Nagoya. I'd like to discuss the "past" and "present" of Osaka through taking a look at spatial whereabouts and regional characteristics. (Part of this research has received scientific research funding (No. 25770297).)
