The themes for these two i-spot lecture series are "Aquapolis Stories" and "The Now and Then of the City of Osaka." It's free to attend, so please don't hesitate to join us!

From an Aquapolis to a Global Metropolis

Lecturer: MURAKAMI Tadayoshi (Associate Professor, Graduate School of Language and Culture, Osaka University)

Lecture Overview

Bangkok, the capital of the Kingdom of Thailand, was established in 1782 near a delta at the mouth of the Chao Phraya River by the founder of the current dynasty, Rama I. Through incorporating a number of canals, the city was called the "Venice of the East" until the turn of the 20th century. Even today, you can see people in the Thon Buri District of Bangkok living their lives near the water. But with the growth of its economy and expansion of its borders leading to consolidation of a land transportation network, Bangkok has transformed into one of the world's preeminent national cities. At this lecture, we'll introduce the history of Bangkok and the connection its people have with water.

This lecture is part of the series entitled "Aquapolis Stories."
