9th Osaka University Seminar on Professional Japanese Language Instruction Research

The Possibilities of Utilizing IT in Professional Japanese Language Instruction

Background and Purpose

In this series of seminars, we have handled a variety of topics related to professional Japanese language education for research students from overseas, including discussions on topics such as dedication to skills like writing, a focus on evaluation of Japanese level, and a broad recapturing of education at the university from the viewpoint of bridging this Japanese language education to career formation and society.

For this seminar, we are going to focus on the less-emphasized topic of methods of education utilizing IT found in professional Japanese language education, exchanging a wide array of information on use of a variety of IT, which has undergone significant development in recent years, as well as developing discussions which can bring knowledge acquired back to the classroom.

More specifically, we will hear a lecture from SUNAMI Hokuto, who, while working as a web designer, has also created and given advice on a variety of content, such as "NIHONGO e-na" and "Japanese Care Navi." The topic of this lecture will be "Is this an instructor's way of life? Words and Learning in the Smart Phone Era," in which Mr. Sunami will speak to us about utilizing IT in professional Japanese language instruction from the viewpoint of responding to the paradigm shift of "words" and "learning" that occurs in learners known as "digital natives".

Next, we'll hear from Hodošček Bor about education and learning support of Hinoki Projects such as Asunaro and Nutmeg, which he was collaboratively developing even before his arrival at the Graduate School of Language and Culture.

In addition, we'll hear from Associate Professor NAMBA Koji about actual practice of various forms of IT in Japanese language education, and an introduction to the student support system Okini.

After these lectures, we plan to have a general discussion on the possibilities of utilizing IT in professional Japanese language instruction. We hope that by sharing your own practices using IT in the classroom, as well as problems and challenges you have faced, this discussion can serve as something to further enhance education practices moving forward, as well contribute to furthering research.
