The themes for these two i-spot lecture series are "Aquapolis Stories" and "The Now and Then of the City of Osaka." It's free to attend, so please don't hesitate to join us!

Scandinavia: Life and Culture Connected by Water -- Learning from Northern Europe's Aquapolis, Stockholm

Lecturer: FURUYA Daisuke (Associate Professor, Graduate School of Language and Culture, Osaka University)

Lecture Overview:

When we take a wide look at the world, we tend to understand it through national borders drawn on the land. But when we look back on the history of exchange between humans, we see that, in fact, this exchange was born of oceans, lakes, and rivers. Within Sweden, which has been gathering attention as an environmentally developed nation, lies the aquapolis Stockholm, a town built on islands of Lake Mälaren, which is connected to the Baltic Sea. At this lecture, we'll take a look back at the life and culture built by the people of this environment. (Part of this research has received scientific research funding (No. 25284145))
