Osaka Univeristy Nakanoshima Science Café - "It's not just the cause of aging. What exactly are the functions of active oxygen useful in medical treatment?"

2015-11-4 (Wed) 19:00 - 20:30

When oxygen (02) changes into the more reactive chemical compound "active oxygen," it is known to cause various phenomena in the human body, such as aging, but in photodynamic therapy, or PDT, which shines light on the body and heals only those particular ailments, it was discovered that this active oxygen is what is doing the healing. In this seminar, Specially Appointed Assistant Professor KIM Sooyeon, who is working on development of a substance which will detect the workings of active oxygen in affected parts of the body, will introduce the newest research trends of PDT, which is being used in a wide array of treatment on the medical front, from minor dermatitis procedures, to treatment of cancer, arterial sclerosis, adult diseases, and even pet ailments, as well as research achievements regarding the development of the substance to detect the workings of active oxygen in afflicted parts of the body.

Guest: KIM Sooyeon (Specially Appointed Assistant Professor, The Institute of Scientific and Industrial Research, Osaka University)

A graduate of the School of Engineering at Hanyang University in 2010, Specially Appointed Assistant Professor KIM also minored in nutrition, which became the inspiration for wanting to do research so that she could improve the quality of people's lives as a chemist, leading her to study in Japan. In 2015, she earned her doctorate in Engineering from the Division of Applied Chemistry, Graduate School of Engineering, Osaka University. She is currently performing research on  biosensor materials and cancer treatments based on photochemistry.
