Osaka University & Osaka Gas: Academic Cooking, Vol. 59 -- An Introduction to Hot Dog Studies: Filled with Ground Beef and Culture

Kaitokudo for the 21st Century and Osaka Gas have jointly been holding a series of unique lectures on certain foods followed by the cooking and eating that food. Joining us for "volume" 59 of this series of learning through cooking is Professor OGURA Akihiko of the Graduate School of Frontier Biosciences at Osaka University. This lecture is sure to be interesting, so don't miss out!

Vol. 59 -- An Introduction to Hot Dog Studies: Filled with Ground Beef and Culture

There are probably not many of you that have never eaten a hot dog before. But do you know where and when the first hot dog in Japan was born? The answer is November 24, 1934, in Nishinomiya, where on this day, a Japanese baseball side led by names like Sawamura Eiji and Kuji Jiro, faced off against a Major League team headlined by the likes of Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig. When a German butcher in Kobe by the name of Hermann Friedrich Wolschke heard that you "can't have baseball like they do in New York without hot dogs," he made sure that he served a sure winner on that day, and that winner was the aforementioned hot dog. Unfortunately, the Japanese baseball fans didn't quite take to the lump of meat that was served, and simply ate the bread while throwing the meat away. Poor Mr. Wolschke. Let's get revenge for Mr. Wolschke's heartache and recreate the first hot dog in Japan.

Capacity: 28 (We will hold a lottery if the number of applicants exceeds this number)

Who may attend? Anyone over the age of 15 may attend this lecture

•Dishes to be prepared: Handmade sausage (hot dog, pot-au-feu)

Fee: 2,100 yen (Tax included)

Application Period: Wednesday, April 1~Friday, April 17 (Web registration begins at 21:00 on Wednesday, April 1, while phone registration begins at 11:00 on Monday, April 6). If the number of applicants exceeds capacity, we will hold a lottery and notify those chosen from Sunday, April 19.
