International Public Policy (IPP) Workshop

2015-2-16 (Mon) 4:20 p.m. - 5:50 p.m.

The Osaka School of International Public Policy (OSIPP) holds International Public Policy (IPP) workshops on an occasional basis to assist exchange among researchers at Osaka University and other institutions. This workshop aims for researchers, practitioners, and students who are interested in international public policies to present their research achievements, discuss freely, and show possible alternative policies, thereby contributing to the formulation of better policies and putting them into practice. This workshop is authoritative, but not authoritarian. Faculty, staff, and undergraduate students at Osaka University are cordially welcome.

The workshop will be held in accordance with the schedule noted below.
Date & Time: Thursday, February 5, 2015, 16:20-17:50
Lecturer: MARUYAMA Shiko, Senior Lecturer, Discipline Group, Economics Discipline Group, University of Technology Sydney
Lecture title: In-Utero Social Interaction of Twins
Outline of the lecture:

We model pre-birth twins' competition for maternal resources inside the womb. When the innate endowment affects both birthweight and the post-birth outcome directly, pre-natal social interaction leads to bias in the standard twin fixed- effects estimator, yielding neither a consistent estimator of returns to birthweight nor a consistent estimator of returns to endowment. We propose an instrumental-variable estimation strategy that recovers consistently the returns to birthweight. Our estimation results indicate that the returns to birthweight is closer to the sibling-based estimates than the twin fixed-effects estimates reported in the previous literature.

This workshop will be conducted in English.
