In 2011, the number 3 cause of death in Japan was pneumonia, 95% of the deaths of which were of those aged 65 or older. As the age of patients rises, so too does the mortality rate associated with pneumonia. Aspiration pneumonia and pneumococcal diseases in particular require special care when it comes to elderly patients. Aspiration occurs more often not during meal times, but during sleep, when a patient may choke while unconscious. This emphasizes the importance of taking steps such as teeth brushing to maintain good dental hygiene. To further prevent pneumococcal diseases, a periodic vaccine for the elderly was started in October of 2014. But families need to also be alert, as this can be easily mistaken for the common cold in the elderly. In this lecture, we'll examine the characteristics and prevention of a wide range of respiratory diseases.
