50th anniversary of Machikane crocodylidae fossil's discovery: Machikane Crocodylidae Summit 2014 (November 16, 2014)

2014-11-16 (Sun) 10:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

In commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the discovery of the Machikane crocodylidae fossil, an Osaka University symposium Machikane Crocodylidae Summit 2014 will be held on Sunday, November 16, 2014.
Following the fortuitous discovery of the fossil during the construction of the School of Science on Osaka University's Toyonaka campus 50 years ago, crocodile fossils have been discovered in various places in Japan. Of them, Kishiwada Crocodile found in Kishiwada, Osaka, and Yage Crocodile found in Hamamatsu, Shizuoka, are thought to be fossils of the same crocodile as Machikane Crocodylidae, Tomistominae. Recently, a large crocodile fossil dating from about 20 million years ago was found in the Oki Islands, Shimane Prefecture.
In this summit, crocodile fossil researchers in Japan and from abroad will speak about the current situation of fossil research, especially research pertaining to the Machikane crocodylidae, while discussing its unsolved mysteries.
