Handai-Asahi Nakanoshima Juku: Thinking about the Social Issue of Suicide

The Handai-Asahi Nakanoshima Juku offers courses produced and sponsored by Osaka University and Asahi Culture Center. The Handai-Asahi Nakanoshima Juku was established at the time [Osaka University's] Nakanoshima Center was built in 2004.

These courses share results of research conducted at Osaka University with the general public in an easy-to-understand format. In these lectures, leading lecturers give presentations on topics in culture, art, history, science, technology, health care, as well as seasonal and current topics.

Suicides are one of the most serious social problems facing modern Japan. What sort of effect does the more than 300,000 people taking of their own lives each year have on society? Moreover, what sort of causes lie hidden behind these suicides and what sort of measures need to be implemented to solve this situation?

In this course, we'll discuss answers to these questions, the current situation of the suicide problem in Japan today and ways to solve this crisis as viewed by political science and economics.
