2014-8-23 (Sat) 1:30 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.

The Handai-Asahi Nakanoshima Juku offers courses produced and sponsored by Osaka University and Asahi Culture Center. The Handai-Asahi Nakanoshima Juku was established at the time [Osaka University's] Nakanoshima Center was built in 2004.

These courses share results of research conducted at Osaka University with the general public in an easy-to-understand format. In these lectures, leading lecturers give presentations on topics in culture, art, history, science, technology, health care, as well as seasonal and current topics.

Date & Time: Saturday, August 23, 2014 -- 1:30 ~ 3:00 p.m.

Lecturer: HACHIYA Masato, Professor Emeritus, Osaka University, Professor, Chubu University

Tuition fee: ¥1,620

This lecture will take a look at the origin and historical development of words, especially ancient words that are still used although there have been changes in their form and meaning. Dr. Hachiya will not deal with theories lacking sufficient foundation about the origin of words and their meaning, but will take a close look at words from a linguistic viewpoint through an analysis of word structure. Some facts become clarified by comparing words in this manner. Ascertaining something difficult to understand is similar to solving a mystery and searching for the origin of words is like exploring one's own roots.

You are sure to find this lecture of great interest!
