16th Osaka University's Collegium Musicum -- Special Performance by MAKIGAMI Koichi, FOOD, and Christian Fennesz

Osaka University's Collegium Musicum has held unique events with artists in different genres in Japan and abroad. In this 16th event, appearing will be Christian Fennesz, an electronic musician known for his collaboration with SAKAMOTO Ryuichi, and MAKIGAMI Koichi, a big name, the vocalist of the band Hikashu, and a voice performer. Additionally, the Norwegian jazz band, FOOD will conduct a special live performance. Come and enjoy this elusive and delicate world of music.

Brief bios of performers

Makigami

MAKIGAMI Koichi, singer

Singer, improvisor, producer, lyricist, and composer, Makigami was born in Atami, Shizuoka in 1956. He has gained international recognition not as an ordinary singer, but as a voice performer. He is a leader of Hikashu, a music band which still engages in unique music activities since they released their first record, "Nijusseiki no owarini [At the end of the 20th Century]." Following the release of his album "Kuchinoha" from Tzadik Records in NY in 1995, he has been invited to some contemporary music festivals in Europe and the U.S. Currently, he is active on the world stage from NY to Tyva Republic for his unique style.

Food

FOOD

The core duo of Food is avant-garde jazz unit of British saxophonist Iain Ballamy and Norwegian drummer Thomas Strønen. Since their debut under the record label Feral Records in 1999, FOOD has released 7 albums. Groove with Iain's melodic and lyrical playing of the saxophone and electronic soundscapes; drumming by Strønen is a core of their music. FOOD features a blend of groove and improvisation. Now they perform as duo and do as well as with invited guests in recording and live performances. This time, FOOD will conduct a special performance with a composer and guitarist Christian Fennesz.

Christian Fennesz

Christian Fennesz

Christian Fennesz, electronic musician, composer, and guitarist, was born in Austria in 1962. He played mainly in rock bands in the 80s and grew involved with in techno music in the 90s, producing music based on guitar and synthesizer sounds. Since his first album "Hotel Paral.lel" was released in 1997, he has actively promoted his works to the world. In 2001, he released a landmark of laptop music called "Endless Summer." Producing collaborative work with famous artists such as SAKAMOTO Ryuichi, he has been involved in cross-genre and cross-border musical activities.

UNLIMITED: Reaching for a new Horizon in Science, #1: Voice and Listening to languages

Talks by MAKIGAMI Koichi, singer, and KINSUI Satoshi, linguist and professor
These two people will talk about voice, language, art, and communication. The talk will be followed by Mr. Makigami's voice performance workshop.
