Nakanoshima Science Café -- "The Front Line of Physics: Topological Insulators -- There's no way a high school student could ever understand this"

2013-11-8 (Fri) 6:30 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.

It has been thought that there are two types of material: materials that conduct electricity -- metals and semiconductors -- and materials that do not conduct electricity -- nonconductive materials, insulators. However, recently, materials referred to as "topological insulators," that do not belong to either category, have been discovered. Topological insulators have a strange property: they behave as insulators internally, but their surface possesses conductive states.

In this cafe, ANDO Yoichi, a leading researcher in topological insulators will take you on a journey in physics to solve the mystery of such materials.
