Scintillating Science Café -- "Terahertz waves, the New World visible with this New Light: bio and security applications, solar batteries..."

2013-11-21 (Thu) 6:30 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.

Both radio and cell phones use electromagnetic waves for communication. The sun, light bulbs, and similar things shine with light. In our lives, radio waves and light are totally different, but in the world of science, in essence, they are the same thing. The theme of this café is terahertz electromagnetic waves.

Terahertz waves are unique electromagnetic waves with properties intermediate between radio waves and light; however, they have not been been made use of because of the difficulty in using them. However, thanks to technological progress, terahertz waves have been found to be very useful in a variety of fields such as medical care, analysis, security, and communication.

Our guest Mr. Kawakami, Institute of Laser Engineering, Osaka University, is engaged in a wide variety of research from basic science to the industrial application of terahertz waves. What's fascinating about terahertz waves? How and what can they change in our lives? Let's take a look at the new world of terahertz waves.

What is the Osaka University Research Council?

Osaka University consists of more than schools, graduate schools, and courses in which students study. There are also research institutes and centers conducting scintillating research. The Osaka University Research Council promotes mutual cooperation among these research institutes and centers in order to support outstanding young researchers actively contributing to research communities in the world.

What is a Scintillating Café?

Scintillating Café is the name for informal seminars sponsored by the Osaka University Research Council and the Support Office for Large-Scale Education and Research Projects. Scintillating Cafés invite researchers and serve as forums for dialogue between researchers and citizens. The organizers hope that participants can appreciate these chances to learn about next-generation environmental technology and bioscience in these Cafés.
