The New Universities: A Bridge to Communities, A Bridge for Communities

2013-10-7 (Mon) 1:30 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.

This seminar aims to elucidate the shape and role of a new type of university, universities which play integral roles in their communities. In a world becoming increasingly globalized, friction between differing value systems becomes all the more likely. In order to avoid dispute and conflict, genuine dialog among members of society cannot be overlooked in order to develop new values that can be shared. These days, leading universities in the world, instead of being institutions devoted solely to nation-state building by means of research and education alone, are assuming the important role of promoting mutual dialog among members of society. One such university is Mindanao State University--Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT). MSU-IIT has thus far been effective in providing a platform for people's voices in a variety of situations, playing, what has become, an indispensable role. Above all, regarding the struggle in Mindanao, by providing educational programs and initiatives, MSU-IIT has opened channels for particularly difficult dialog.

Through normal extension programs such as these, as a Leading University in the southern Philippines, MSU-IIT, by providing extremely rapid response and recovery from natural disasters, etc., has succeeded in cultivating a trusting relationship with local communities. In 2011, the northern part of Mindanao was severely damaged by typhoon Washi. With communications and lifelines cut, MSU-IIT took leadership in aiding disaster victims in the midst of the chaos that ensued. Hence, it can be said the question now is what direction should IIT take in the future.

In the first half of this seminar, Sukarno D. Tanggol, DPA Chancellor, Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology will talk about New Universities and explain the Extension Programs of MSU-IIT.

In the second portion of this seminar, while listening to more detailed explanations of the Community Extension Programs, the fields of study, and majors at MSU-IIT, Osaka University departments, fields of study, and other organizations in attendance at this seminar will be free to discuss what types of community extension programs they can get involved in at MSU-IIT.

Note: Universities, organizations, departments hoping to conclude joint projects, student field studies, and such with MSU-IIT, but for whom doing so at this seminar is inconvenient, please note that arranging another opportunity is possible. Please inform the organizers of this seminar using the information provided below.

Mindanao State University - Iligan Institute of Technology

Iligan Institute of Technology is one of the institutions of higher education in Mindanao State University, but at the same time, it is an independent comprehensive university with a liberal arts school. Information science research at this university is well known and IIT is a leader in IT technology in the Philippines which is expected to catch up with India and overtake it. However, IT technology is not the only unique aspect of this university.
As a national comprehensive university, each school, department, and division has their own community extension service programs. The university as a whole is involved in a variety of activities such as promoting harmonious coexistence with the environment in the northern part of Mindanao, helping sea-oriented nomadic groups called "Sama de Laut," and facilitating recurrent education of English for adults.
In order to facilitate dialog among people in different positions, conduct research, and cultivate the next generation in dialog with the community, this year, Osaka University's Global Collaboration Center (GLOCOL) concluded a school-to-school academic exchange agreement with MSU-IIT.
