6th Tekijuku Lectures -- A Comparative History of Hospitals and Pharmaceutical Companies -- Europe and Japan

2013-9-21 (Sat) - 2013-10-5 (Sat)

In order to honor the achievements of Tekijuku, the Tekijuku Memorial Association has held Tekijuku Lectures since 2008 for the purpose of discussing the historical role and the spirit embodied in Tekijuku.
In this 6th series of lectures, speakers will talk about the importance hospitals played in the development of medical treatment and the technological revolution in medical treatment driven by pharmaceutical companies. The lecturers will take a look at the history of hospitals and pharmaceutical companies in Europe and Japan mainly in terms of their management.
Hospitals have become what they are today through a variety of management innovations. These lectures will take a look at how hospitals in Switzerland changed from the second half of the 19th century through the first half of the 20th century in relation to progress in medical technology and how this progress changed the medical market. Additionally, these lectures will focus on strategies of foreign-financed pharmaceutical companies in Japan after the war, examining their innovative way of doing things, research and development that greatly affected Japanese counterparts. Finally, these lectures will discuss the situation in Japan during the dynamic decline and renewal of the vaccine industry in the world since the 1980s.
