Lecture: "The 'Design' of Mimetic and Onomatopoeic Vocabulary"

Lecturer: AKITA Kimi, Lecturer, Graduate School of Language and Culture, Osaka University
There’s a lot of mimetic and onomatopoeic vocabulary in Japanese. For example, "shikoshiko udon noodles" and "Go gaatt down the Midosuji Boulevard". Words with similar meanings are also present in Korean and other languages in Africa, Southeast Asia and the Amazon. Such vocabulary can be likened to "pictorial expressions," a means for language to express things in a compact form. Referring to this pictoriality, this lecture will look at the fun of sentence structure and function of mimicry and onomatopoeia from a linguistic and psychological viewpoint.
