Headaches, backaches, aching joints, and nerve pain -- pain makes it hard to be independent. A specialist in psychosomatic medicine who treats chronic pain says that many patients assume mistakenly their emotional pain is physical pain. Pain is a kind of sensor that informs us of illness and enables us to avoid danger and it sometimes manifests itself in times of emotional pain. Brain research has clarified that the brain activity associated with pain and surprise are strikingly similar.

This lecture will focus on the latest research in pain and its treatment.
