Osaka University & Osaka Gas: Academic Cooking -- Vol. 28: Christmas in Naples

Kaitokudo for the 21st Century and Osaka Gas have jointly been holding a series of unique lectures on a particular food followed by the cooking and eating that food.

The 28th "volume" of Academic Cooking will be held on Thursday, December 20. YAMADA Takashi, Assistant Professor at the Graduate School of Letters, will give the lecture.This session is sure to be interesting so don't miss it!

Christmas celebrating the birth of Jesus is still the biggest festival for Christian churches around the world. However, celebrating Christmas by giving and receiving presents and eating a special cake on December 24th or 25th is just the adaptation of a celebration for this great event from a regional celebration that has been going on for more than 2000 years. Actually, this winter festival was born during the Roman Period by intricately intertwining Christianity and a Mithraic festival for the winter solstice. In a similar manner, Saint Nicholas was borrowed from Turkey. Thus, the customs for celebrating Christmas vary by religious denomination, region, and period.

This lecture will take a look at a traditional Christmas as celebrated in Naples, a city on the Italian Peninsula. Naples nurtured its unique culture in the Kingdom of Naples through church music in the 17th to 18th centuries, in nativity scenes (presepio) decoration, and the current Christmas dinner on citizens' tables.

Intended for: high school students and older

Space is limited to: 24

If more than 24 persons apply, successful applicants will be chosen by lottery.

Participants will cook a home-style Neapolitan Christmas dinner: vongole bianco, South Italian-style fried sardines, Neapolitan salad, and dried fruits.

Tuition fee: 2,000 yen (including consumption tax)

  • Online applications will be accepted from 9:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 1.
  • Applications by phone cannot be accepted until Monday November 7.
  • If the number of applicants exceeds the capacity, the successful applicants will be determined by lottery and informed of such on Wednesday, November 21.
