Thinking about the Human Science of Community Revival following the Great East Japan Earthquake
-- "Mutual Learning, Mutual Support, toward an Altruistic Society" --

Founded in 1972, Osaka University's School of Human Sciences is holding a symposium celebrating the 40th anniversary of its founding on Thursday, December 20. All interested persons --students, staff, as well as common citizens-- are cordially invited to attend. (Please note, however, that advance registration is requested.)

Established under the concepts of "Through manifold and comprehensive research into human activities, society, and education; responding to unprecedented turning points and the needs of Society and Academia ," the Human Sciences now face the enormous challenge posed by the reconstruction needs following the Great East Japan Earthquake. How will the Human Sciences respond to this unprecedented challenge and how can they proceed in such?

The 40th anniversary symposium consists of two parts in which participants are invited to think together with us regarding the challenges from academic, social, and practical viewpoints.

Part I: Three students from the School and Graduate School of Human Sciences will report on activities and research concerning support for the stricken areas from the time immediately following the terrible earthquake and tsunami.

Part II: Academic staff of the Graduate School of Human Sciences and academic staff from other departments will hold a discussion, centering on key concepts of "Mutual Learning," "Mutual Support," and "Altruism."
