Interpretation WORKSHOP at Chiang Mai University, Thailand

Interpretation & Translation

This workshop, a part of Translation Studies, will take a look at the basics of interpretation and translation theory and consider relevant points of the challenges facing them and linguistic education. In addition, participants will be able to actually experience training methods being adopted for domestic and international interpreters and see their relationship to Japanese [language] education. Moreover, the current situation regarding education for interpretation and translation as well as research in interpretation and translation in both Thailand and Japan will be introduced in addition to a discussion concerning the future of translation research in Thailand.

This workshop is mainly intended for those involved in translation in Japanese language education or those considering practical use for such. Instructors already involved in or teaching translation classes are very welcome.

As noted below, this workshop will take place at Chiang Mai University in Thailand.

Program

1st Day -- Friday, March 9

  • 10:00 ~ 10:15 -- Opening Ceremony, Orientation (Person in charge: Prof. Tsuda)
  • 10:15 ~ 10:40 -- Self-introductions by participants (Time allotted may vary according to the number of participants.)
  • 10:40 ~ 12:00 -- General view of Interpretation Research (Person in charge: Prof. Yamamoto)
    Interpretation Research and Translation Research: Differences and Similarities in Interpretation and Translation
    General view of Interpretation Research regarding the department level targeted for language acquisition
  • 12:00 ~ 1:30 -- Lunch Break
  • 1:30 ~ 3:00 -- The Current Situation regarding Interpretation & Translation Education and Interpretation & Translation Research (Persons in charge: Prof. Yamamoto, Prof. Tsuda)
    Interpretation & Translation Education and Interpretation & Translation Research in Thailand
    Interpretation & Translation Education and Interpretation & Translation Research in Japan
  • 3:00 ~ 3:15 -- Break
  • 3:15 ~ 4:30 -- Interpretation Training (Persons in charge: Prof. Yamamoto, Prof. Tsuda)
    Overview and Application of Training Methodology (including introduction of the development of instructional materials)
    Pair-work and group-work in actual interpretation classroom simulations
2nd Day -- Saturday, March 10
  • 10:00 ~ 12:00 -- Actual examples of Interpretation Implementation (Person in charge: Prof. Tsuda)
    Multilingual Symbiotic Society and Public Interpretation and Translation
  • 12:00 ~ 1:30 -- Lunch Break
  • 1:30 ~ 3:00 -- Interpretation Training (Persons in charge: Prof. Yamamoto, Prof. Tsuda)
  • 3:00 ~ 3:15 -- Break
  • 3:15 ~ 3:45 -- Question Time & Closing Comments (Persons in charge: Prof. Yamamoto, Prof. Tsuda)
  • 3:45 ~ 4:00 -- Closing Ceremony, Presentation of Diplomas
