7th science café "What are living things? -- as viewed by a Computer Scientist

2011-11-19 (Sat) 4:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.

The 7th science café "What are living things? -- as viewed by a Computer Scientist" will be held from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 19.

The Funding Program for World-Leading Innovative R&D on Science and Technology "Comprehensive understanding of immune dynamism: toward manipulation of immune responses" headed by Professor AKIRA Shizuo has held science cafés as an outreach activity.

In these science cafés, normal citizens can come, listen to and discuss topics in advanced science with researchers, specialists actually engaged in conducting scientific research. In cafés known as "Cafés on the Edge," in particular,  events on the edge, the frontier, of the latest research are discussed.

The upcoming 7th science café features NAKAI Kenta, a professor at The University of Tokyo. Under the theme of "What are living things?" Professor Nakai, a computer scientist, will speak about methods using supercomputers to examine the balance of molecules making up living things and relations between these molecules.

Previous science cafés were held at Art Area B1, but this 7th café will be held at Architect Café in Umeda, Osaka. Organizers hope that participants will be able to listen and discuss science topics in a more comfortable atmosphere at this venue. Moreover, following the science café, participants will be able to enjoy socializing with the guest speaker and other participatns from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m.

How about joining us in this get-together as well to discuss the simple question "What are living things?" with a computer scientist?

Attendance fee: There is no charge for attending.

Please note that you will be able to order food and drink in the café at your own expense.
