Prof. Dr. Rudolph Cleveringa Commemoration Lecture -- "A Tiger in Doshomachi"

 Prof. Dr. Harm Beukers of Leiden University will give a lecture about Dutch-Japanese relations and the development of Western Medicine in Japan on Thursday, November 24 from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. (Doors open at 5:30.)

Title: "A Tiger in Doshomachi"

A papier mache tiger in Doshomachi symbolizes the history of Doshomachi known is Osaka as the town of medicine. Dr. Beukers' lecture on Dutch-Japanese relations regarding medicines from the Edo Period to the early Meiji Period will start from Doshomachi, where Shinno Festival is held every year in November. Dutch pharmacopoeial merchants built the foundation of the modern Japanese pharmaceutical industry in Osaka and Kyoto. Dr. Beuker will talk about the history of the current pharmaceutical industry while referring to Dutch-Japanese relations.
