Enjoying Plant Science 2011 -- Plants and Reproduction

Since 2003, The Japan Society of Plant Physiologists has held open lectures every two years for the benefit and enjoyment of members of the general public. This year, thanks to support from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, public lectures entitled "Enjoying Plant Science 2011 -- Plants and Reproduction" are being held on Sunday, November 6 on Osaka University's Toyonaka campus. Persons attending will receive a present from the organizers; the organizers look forward to welcoming many to this year's lectures.

Program

Part I: Lectures -- 1:00 ~ 3:00 p.m., ∑ [sigma] Hall, International Bldg., School of Engineering Science

  1. "Plants can tell the difference between their pollen?!" TAKAYAMA Seiji, Nara Institute of Science and Technology
  2. "How do flowers make their colors and patterns?" HOSHINO Atsushi, National Institute for Basic Biology
  3. "How do flowers make their different structures -- calyx, petals, stamens, pistils?" KAKIMOTO Tatsuo, Osaka University
  4. Quiz Time -- A quiz on the content of the lectures. Finalists will be presented with awards.
Part II: Experiments and Presentation

-- 3:00 ~ 5:30 p.m., 2nd Floor, B Bldg., Main Building, School of Science

Choice of one of the following activities:

  1. Experiment on pollen tube extension
  2. Experiment involving separation of flower pigments and absorption spectra of those pigments
  3. "Observations made with a Scanning Electron Microscope in Plant Organ Mutations"

Supervision of experiments: Takayama Seiji, Hoshino Atsushi, Kakimoto Tatsuo, Takagi Shingo (Osaka University), Okitsu Naoko (Suntory), and more.
