Natural Disaster and Global Collaboration: Responses to the Great East Japan Earthquake, 3.11

2011-9-22 (Thu) 10:00 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.

On March 11, 2011, Japan experienced a natural disaster due to a massive earthquake and tsunami. These unprecedented catastrophes drew tremendous concern from within Japan and all over the world. Osaka University's GLOCOL and the University of the Philippines Center for International Studies have organized this seminar aiming to review and reflect on the various responses that are humanitarian in nature. This is one way of overcoming the grim experience and hopefully will contribute towards the ultimate reconstruction and healing process to those affected by the disaster.

Researchers from the Philippines and Japan as well as graduate students from GLOCOL's Fieldwork, Internship and Experiential Learning Design Office (FIELDO) will make presentations and exchange opinions regarding the type of collaboration that can be done in disasters. Moreover, in order to promote collaboration and deepen experience in dealing with disasters, as part of the same program, students from both OU and UP are planning extended fieldwork among the Aeta, indigenous people, who were seriously impacted by the 1991 eruption of the Philippine volcano Mt. Pinatubo.
