World Forum for Drug Discovery in KANSAI 2011 -- National Strategies for Promoting the Development of Bio-Industry -- "Drug Discovery at Academia and Bioventure"

2011-2-18 (Fri) 1:00 p.m. - 6:30 p.m.

The World Forum for Drug Discovery in KANSAI 2011 -- National Strategies for Promoting the Development of Bio-Industry -- "Drug Discovery at Academia and Bioventure" will be held on Friday, February 18.

Since the completion of human genome project in 2003, open innovation has become a big trend in the pharmaceutical industry, increasing the importance of drug discovery at university and venture companies. Some Western countries are strategically promoting the bio-industry and half of the drug pipelines at major pharmaceutical companies are occupied by universities and venture companies. Recently, in Asia, government-led bio-research support policies are being strongly promoted.
On the other hand, while Japan leads the world in basic research in the academic world, research systems and intellectual property strategies at the first stage of drug discovery are not well-organized and the transfer of technology to pharmaceutical companies lags behind that in Western nations.
This forum has invited persons from the USA, the world-leading nation in terms of medical industry, as well as persons from drug discovery institutes in Asia, institutes are expected to become important in the future, to speak about their nations' biology promotion strategies, in particular, about factors that make them successful and the challenges they face in drug discovery. By doing so, we will highlight the role of drug discovery at university and venture companies and how to support such.
