Poignant stories from Filipinos living in Japan & Panel Discussion: "Thinking about Multiculturalism"

2011-2-6 (Sun) 10:30 a.m. - 12:00 noon

As one part of the One World Festival being held at the Osaka International House Foundation on Sunday, February 6., the Global Collaboration Center (GLOCOL) will hold a panel discussion.

Did you know that one out of every ten Filipinos is studying or working in a country other than the Philippines? In fact, more than 200,000 Filipinos live in Japan! As one might expect, Filipinos living in Japan come from different social and economic backgrounds and their lives and experiences in Japan are varied.

GLOCOL has invited three Filipinos to take part in this panel discussion. One of them is the spouse of a Japanese, the second, an international student, and the third, a Filipino of Japanese descent. The panel discussion will open with an introductions of the panelists, images people commonly have of the Philippines, and a quiz about Philippine immigrants.

The panelists will then talk about their personal history, their life before coming to Japan, what brought them to Japan, and their life now in Japan. In an interview-like setting, they'll be asked about what they had to work especially hard on when they came to Japan and things in Japan that warmed their hearts. Lastly, they will share their hopes and visions for the future.

Having this chance to discuss with persons born and raised in the Philippines, but who now live in Japan, we hope the result of this discussion will be to come up with ideas as to how we might create a more genuine multicultural society, one in which persons, regardless of background, may interact and enjoy differences and similarities.
