GLOCOL Seminar: "The Media and the United Nations"

The Fieldwork, Internship and Experiential Learning Design Office (FIELDO) will hold its 3rd lecture on Friday, December 17. The guest is Yomiuri Newspapers correspondent SHIRAKAWA Yoshikazu. As a reporter, Mr. Shirakawa gathered information in New York about the UN Security Council's response to nuclear experiments and missile launches in North Korea, the behind-the-scenes stories of diplomatic negotiations, and Japan's campaign for a permanent seat of the Security Council. In this seminar, he will talk about the real situation in the UN Security Council and the relationship between the media and UN. He will also talk about his career as a journalist.

Brief bio for Mr. Shirakawa

Graduating from the Faculty of Social Sciences, Hitotsubashi University, Mr. Shirakawa joined Yomiuri Newspapers in 1989. After working in the Editorial Department of the Foreign News Department (current International Department) Communications Department in Abashiri, he was sent to Seoul as a correspondent. Then, from April 2005 through June 2009, he worked in New York as a special corespondent in charge of the United Nations, where he gathered information about UN Security Council's response to nuclear tests and missile launches in North Korea and Japan's campaign for a permanent seat of the Security Council. Following that, he served as a political reporter for the Defense Ministry from July 2009 through August 2010.
