JCAS Joint Research Symposium -- The Shock from the Birth of a Market of 1.9 Billion People in ASEAN and China

2010-11-3 (Wed) 1:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.

The Japan Consortium for Area Studies (JCAS) will hold a Joint Research Symposium -- The Shock from the Birth of a Market of 1.9 Billion People in ASEAN and China on Wednesday, November 3.

Purpose

Since 1990s, economic integration centering on free trade agreements has rapidly developed in the world. Under these circumstances, the ASEAN-China Free Trade Agreement (ACFTA) came into effect in January 2010. With total market share of 1.9 billion people, ACFTA is the largest in the world. Such a large market significantly affects economic and business activities in Asia. The effects are multilateral -- changes in trade and diplomatic relationships in ASEAN and China impact Japan and Japanese companies in ASEAN; likewise, these activities affect China as well as have impact on Chinese companies in ASEAN.

This symposium will discuss the significance, impact, and challenges of ACFTA from the standpoints of Southeast Asian research and Chinese research, focusing on political economics and management.

This symposium is a joint research effort of the Japan Consortium for Area Studies,

a new type of organization consisting of research organizations, educational organizations, and the academic community with regard to research about various regions in the world, and organizations, including civil organizations, closely connected to local communities.

The regional economic integration of the theme of this symposium can be said to reflect modern challenges common to various countries and academic fields. It is expected that the mutual interaction among the specialists of the various regions and academic fields in this symposium will give birth to new insights and scholarship.
