Seminar by GLOCOL & Hurights Osaka -- Considering Japanese Government ODA by Examining Japanese ODA in the Mekong River Basin Countries

2010-9-25 (Sat) 2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Hurights Osaka and Osaka University's Global Collaboration Center (GLOCOL) are planning a series of seminars entitled "Asking Japanese society to listen to the voice of the people in international cooperation and development". The second seminar takes place on Saturday, September 25th.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced the final report on the role of Official Development Assistance (ODA) entitled "Promoting the National Interest -- Living with People of the World and Promote Peace and Prosperity" on June 29, 2010.

It holds up the following 3 priorities: (1) poverty reduction (contribution to achievement of millennium development goals, (2) investment in peace building, and (3) promoting sustainable economic growth.

The report also comes up with a policy to implement strategic and effective assistance featuring strengthening hands-on approach. To view the report, click here.

In thinking of the future role of ODA, it is important to review the past ODA in detail. For this seminar, the organizers have invited KIGUCHI Yuka of Mekong Watch to speak about problems associated with relocation of people and environmental destruction. Mekong Watch is a non-profit organization which supervises the development of the Mekong River Basin countries and presents political proposals.

In this seminar, Ms. Kiguchi will talk about resident relocation problems and environmental destruction associated with Nam Theun 2 Hydroelectric Project in Laos for the purpose of poverty reduction and Samut Prakan sewage treatment whose solution has been promoted as an environmental challenge. Based on her report, we'd like to discuss the role of ODA with attendees.
