2nd Institute for Protein Research Seminar -- Protein -- a Familiar but Mysterious Material Playing an Important Role in Lives

The Institute for Protein Research, Osaka University will hold a special seminar open to senior high school students on Friday, August 20.

When you hear the word "protein" you may think of a nutrient; however, actually different proteins are involved in life phenomena -- proteins performing functions in animals and plants and proteins making up viruses that may cause infectious diseases.

Professors at Osaka University's Institute for Protein Research will, in an easy-to-understand manner, explain about protein, a familiar but mysterious material that plays an important role in life.

Venue: Hall, 1st floor, Institute for Protein Research, Suita Campus, Osaka University

Access: a 15 minute walk from Kita-Senri on the Hankyu Senri Line.

Intended for: In addition to high school students, parents are also cordially invited to these sessions. University students in the first and second year are also welcome!

Admission limited to about 30.

  • 10:00 a.m. --  Greetings, "What is a university laboratory?" HASE Toshiharu, Director, Institute for Protein Research, Osaka University
  • 10:15 a.m. -- "The Role and Shape of Protein",  KURISU Genji, Professor, Institute for Protein Research, Osaka University
  • 11:30 a.m. -- "Brain Diseases and Protein", YOSHIKAWA Kazuaki, Professor, Institute for Protein Research, Osaka University
  • 12:30 p.m. -- Lunch (Please use restaurants on the campus.)
  • 2:00 - 3 p.m. -- Hands-on practice using microscope & a tour to see large equipment such as an X-ray apparatus for crystal analysis and a superconducting nuclear magnetic resonance apparatus
