2nd Phonetics Mini-Symposium

Many persons interested in research and education with regard to languages and phonetics attended the Phonetics Mini-Symposium on September 20, 2008. (Additional information about last year's symposium can be found in the link at the bottom of this page.)

As a follow-up to last year's, this year after listening to experiences of teachers who are active in phonetic research and language instruction in order to establish concrete guidelines for promoting phonetic research and education, we'd like to consider the basic and very important issue of "Which particular phonemes should be taught in foreign language instruction in Japan?"
Individuals interested in this topic, regardless of which language, are cordially invited to this symposium.

Participation fee: 500 yen (this fee does not include the charge for an after-symposium party)

1:00 p.m. Registration starts.
1:30 p.m. Opening speech: SAKAI Kazumi, German Education, Keio University
1:40 p.m. Keynote lectures on the topic of:

  • "Problems in teaching pronunciation in Foreign Language Education in Japan"
    • KOBAYASHI Atsushi, English Phonetics, Joshibi University of Art and Design,
    • OIWA Shoko, French Phonetics, Nagoya University of Foreign Studies,
    • HIRAI Kazuyuki, Chinese Education, Nihon University
    • KITAOKA Chinatsu, Russian Education, Osaka University

4:00 p.m. Round-table talk "Thinking about Phonemes to be taught to Japanese Speakers" by SAKAI Kazumi, KOBAYASHI Atsushi, OIWA Shoko, HIRAI Kazuyuki, KITAOKA Chinatsu, and KAMIYAMA Takao (Indo-European Languages, Phonetics, Osaka University)
5:00 p.m. Closing speech: UEDA Isao (Phonetics, Phonology, Osaka University)
5:30 p.m. After-symposium party
