The three universities of Kobe University, Kyoto University, and Osaka University have been holding joint international symposiums at the beginning of the new year. On Friday, January 21, 2011, Osaka University will host this year's symposium. This year's theme is "Water and Life in the 21st Century".

This symposium will focus on understanding water problems and consider the relationship between people and water, reexamining our past close relationship and looking to find ways to improve the situation.

The organizers have selected this theme because it is appropriate for three universities that are located in the Kansai area, an area with the largest basin that includes Lake Biwa and the Yodo River, sources of abundant ground water, an area known for good quality water in Nada, Hyogo and Fushimi, Kyoto, and Osaka that intends to be an aqua metropolis.
