Language and the Human Condition: Social Conflict and Linguistic Behaviour - The European Treatment of "Kurds"

2014年11月2日 (日) 13:00 から 18:00

The international symposium is organized within the framework of the research project “Language and the Human Condition: Social Conflict and Linguistic Behaviour” (JSPS KAKENHI T245204650, Graduate School of Language and Culture) at Osaka University.

It seems that protracted violent social conflicts could either be seen as conflicts of a genuine linguistic nature or they are, even when they blatantly appear to be of some non-linguistic nature, at any rate, linguistically coded in every phase of the formation and development process.
Whether potential, dormant, latent, passive or actual, erupted, active, or interrupted, ceased, settled, resolved, in any case and at every stage social conflicts engrave themselves with methodical accuracy and profuse details on the vernaculars of the involved and affected social groups and communities.
This act of engraving of protracted social conflicts on the vernacular of all parties involved is not a sole set of traces left behind by some socially relevant event or incident but is the very genesis and unfolding of the conflict itself.

The so-called “Kurdish-Turkish conflict” – which is both in connection with its history and with regard to its current state at the same time a European problem – can be considered the model case par excellence for this circumstance.
