University Education Support Programs
Program for Promoting High-Quality University Education
Program for the Promotion of Internationalization of University Education- Japanese Government Support for Long-term Study Abroad
"Japanese Government Support
for Long-term Study Abroad" aims to further promote university
education reform through nurturing professionals who can contribute to
international society and to the enhancement of the international
competitiveness of universities by sending students overseas to
graduate schools or other institutions for long periods. Students will
be sent under the study abroad programs operated by each university.
The students will either earn credits or study in their professional
fields.
Osaka University's
Support
Program for Long-term Study Abroad
started
in 2005. Two to four students have been sent to graduate schools
overseas every year since then.
- Advanced International Education and Research Support Program
The "Advanced International
Education and Research Support Program" aims to further facilitate
higher education reform by sending faculty members of universities and
other institutions overseas to educational research institutions and by
providing financial support for superior methods of making Japanese
higher education more internationally acceptable and enhancing its
commonality.
In 2007, the "Advanced International Education and Research Support
Program" of each university was allowed to apply for one program.
According to a MEXT publication, 16 programs were selected from among
64 programs from national, prefectural, and private universities
(acceptance rate: 25%). One project was selected from Osaka University.

As for the Advanced International Education and Research Support Program in 2007, 226 Programs were selected from among 304 Programs from national, prefectural, and private universities (acceptance rate: 74.3%). In the case of Osaka University, 14 programs were selected in the category of "Promotion of Internationalization of Faculties in the Advanced Research Fields."
- Strategic Fund for Establishing Headquarters in Universities
The "Strategic Fund for Establishing Headquarters in Universities" aims at further facilitating the internationalization of higher education by providing financial support for superior approaches in comprehensive international education activities, such as implementing international joint programs in cooperation with overseas universities for the purpose of increasing international competitiveness, and the nurturing of talented people who can be active on the international stage.

Cancer Professionals Training Plan
The "Cancer Professionals Training Plan" aims at reinvigorating university education and the training of cancer treatment professionals by providing financial assistance to superior programs nurturing high-quality cancer professionals among programs at national, prefectural, and private universities.
