Addressing Conflict of Interest

In carrying out industry-university-government activities, it is to be expected and is quite reasonable that faculty or staff are rewarded fairly by the company or fulfill appropriate obligations to the company. However, universities conducting research to discover the truth and providing advanced education differ in their basic character and role from companies conducting commercial activities. For that reason, in industry-university-government activities, conflict may be caused between profits and obligations arising from industry-university-government activities and the university's responsibilities.

This is called conflict of interest. If it is not dealt with properly, society's trust in faculty, staff, and the university may be damaged, resulting not only industry-university-government activities being harmed, but also education and research activities--which are a university's primary mission may be harmed. Therefore, appropriate management of conflict of interest enables faculty and staff to concentrate on education, research, and industry-university-government activities without anxiety and to achieve sustainable development.
