Joint Workshop by 10 Global Leaders High Schools (GLHS) held

On Saturday, February 9,  a joint workshop by 10 Global Leaders High Schools (GLHS) was held at Osaka University Hall under the sponsorship of Osaka Prefectural Board of Education. The objective of the workshop was for students belonging to GLHS to learn from each other through conducting research in the arts and sciences and by making presentations. It also aimed to increase students' motivation for learning, and their ability to problem-solve and make presentation through such activities.
The first workshop was held last year. In July 2012, Osaka University and the Osaka Prefectural Board of Education signed a cooperation agreement. Thus, the second workshop was held at Osaka University.
Following greetings from organizers, President HIRANO delivered a keynote speech, "Continue to Dream." He talked about his memories of high school days, attitude toward research, feelings for Osaka University, and efforts in pursuing the fulfillment of one's dreams. About 500 students listened to his talk in rapt attention.
His speech was followed by a presentation session in which students made unrefined but ingenious presentations on subjects they had selected. EGAWA Atsushi, Director, Center for Education in Liberal Arts and Sciences, OSAKA Mariko, Professor, Graduate School of Human Sciences, and BANZAWA Ayumu, Professor, Graduate School of Economics, who participated in the workshop as commentators were pleasantly surprised with the high quality of the presentations.
At the end of the presentations, KOJIMA Seiji, ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary for the Kansai Region, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, commented on the students' presentations and Trustee HIGASHIJIMA encouraged the students to experience the allure of self-motivated learning and make further efforts.
Prior to these presentations, in the morning, mock classes of arts and science were held at the Graduate School of Letters and the Graduate School of Science for GLHS students. KINSUI Satoshi, Professor, Graduate School of Letters taught a lesson on "Characteristics of Japanese Language viewed through Role Languages' [social roles and language]" and SHIMODA Tadashi Professor, Graduate School of Science gave a lecture under the theme of "Encouragement of Positive Learning."
Students enjoyed the lessons in the academic atmosphere different from their usual classes with eager faces. Some students asked questions after these classes.

Osaka University will continue to promote cooperation with high schools through these workshops and other approaches in order to nurture global personnel as next generation leaders.
